Every garden tells a different story. Here are a few recent projects that show how thoughtful planting and design can transform an outdoor space, from blank new-build plots to established gardens ready for a fresh start.

Transforming a dark, enclosed space to light-filled, vibrant garden

This project transformed a garden that had become dominated by mature cypress hedges planted around seventy years ago. Their removal, prompted by a mature willow falling, revealed a surprisingly spacious garden, flooding it with light and creating the opportunity for a complete redesign.

Working closely with the client, I developed a naturalistic, layered planting scheme that reflected her preferences while making the most of the site's new conditions. A more diverse planting palette has created a vibrant, textural garden with movement and year-round interest.

Now, two years on, the garden is maturing into a characterful, personal space that demonstrates my approach to creating gardens that are both ecologically appropriate and deeply connected to the people who use them.

From new-build plot to lush green oasis

Starting with a typical new-build plot of compacted clay, builders' rubble and little more than a lawn, careful soil improvement was the essential first step before planting could begin.

The planting was designed to make the most of the changing light, creating borders that provide colour, structure and year-round interest. What was once a blank space is now a beautiful, thriving garden, alive with birds, bees and butterflies, and a wonderful example of how thoughtful preparation and planting can transform even the most challenging new-build garden.

Rubble-filled plot to leafy retreat

Once a rubble filled neglected space, this small Victorian garden is now a richly planted outdoor retreat. Careful selection of trees, layered planting and contrasting textures frame a welcoming patio area, creating a garden with depth, seasonal interest and a sense of escape, despite its compact size.
